Affirming Across Identities: Building connection through Neurodiversity, LGBTQIA+, and cultural inclusion

POSTPONED until May 2027

Tickets and further details will be released closer to the date.

Presented by Sandy Lin (she/they)

A reflective, practical webinar for allied health therapists who want to build deeper connection with clients and families by understanding how neurodiversity, LGBTQIA+ identities and culture shape communication, relationships and access to support.

This webinar explores how neurodiversity-affirming, LGBTQIA+ affirming and culturally affirming practices can help us build more meaningful connections with clients and families. It considers how these perspectives may intersect in practice, while recognising that people may identify with one, several, or none of these communities, and that each person’s experience is unique.

What happens when the person in front of you doesn’t fit the box you were trained in?

You’ve worked with a client whose way of communicating didn’t match what the textbooks described, or sat with a family whose values, language and expectations looked different to your own, and felt the gap between what you were taught to do and what this person actually needed from you. That gap isn’t a sign you’re getting it wrong. It’s an invitation to get curious, and when you start looking at identity, culture and communication together, the way you connect with clients and families begins to shift.

Here’s what comes up for so many of us:

  • How do you support social communication without teaching someone to mask who they are?
  • How do you create a space where a client feels safe to explore and express their identity, both in the therapy room and beyond it?
  • How do you work alongside a family whose culture, language and expectations differ from yours, without falling back on assumptions or stereotypes?
  • How do you hold several parts of a person’s identity at once, when each one shapes how they communicate, connect and access support?

If these questions have been sitting with you, this session is for you.

Why this webinar is different

One conversation, because that’s how people live their lives

This isn’t a checklist for working with a particular community, and it won’t hand you a universal formula. It’s about developing a more reflective, flexible and person-centred approach to practice, one that values lived experience, supports authentic communication and recognises that meaningful connection begins with understanding the individual.

Sandy brings neurodiversity-affirming, LGBTQIA+ affirming and culturally affirming practice into the one conversation, because that’s how people live their lives. Drawing on professional knowledge, community knowledge and their own lived experience as an Asian-raised, neuroqueer speech pathologist, Sandy guides you to look at how identity, culture, communication and systems interact, and what that means for the way you show up for clients, families and colleagues.

Three lenses, one conversation

What we’ll explore together

01

Through a neurodiversity-affirming lens

  • Different communication styles, and how our assumptions influence our practice
  • Supporting social communication that prioritises connection, participation, autonomy and authentic communication
  • Moving away from a focus on conformity or masking
02

Through an LGBTQIA+ affirming lens

  • Supporting identity exploration and integration
  • Recognising the impact of stigma and exclusion
  • Creating environments where people can express themselves and participate more safely
  • Extending affirming principles beyond the therapy room into schools, workplaces and wider service systems
03

Through an Asian cultural perspective

  • Culturally responsive, affirming support for neurodivergent clients and their families
  • Language, family relationships, cultural expectations and community strengths
  • Stigma, migration experiences and access to services
  • Why culture is never a fixed set of characteristics, and why affirming practice starts with curiosity about each family’s experiences and values

Bringing it all together

The workshop brings these perspectives together to explore how identity, culture, communication and systems interact. You’ll be encouraged to reflect on your own assumptions, consider whose needs are being prioritised, and identify practical strategies for creating more inclusive and affirming clinical and workplace environments.

What you’ll learn

By the end of this webinar, you’ll be able to:

  1. Describe key principles of neurodiversity-affirming, LGBTQIA+-affirming and culturally responsive practice, and recognise the importance of understanding clients within their individual, cultural and identity contexts.
  2. Identify how assumptions about communication, identity and social expectations can influence clinical practice, including the risk of prioritising conformity or masking over authentic communication, participation and wellbeing.
  3. Recognise the potential intersections between neurodiversity, LGBTQIA+ identities, culture and family context, and consider how these may influence a person’s experiences of communication, relationships, service access and inclusion.
  4. Apply culturally responsive principles when working with Asian clients and families, including exploring individual cultural experiences, language, family values, community strengths, expectations and potential barriers without relying on stereotypes or generalisations.
  5. Identify practical strategies for creating more affirming and inclusive clinical, educational and workplace environments, including reflecting on language, assumptions, systems, communication expectations and opportunities for client participation.

Who is this webinar for?

This webinar is for allied health therapists, including speech pathologists, occupational therapists, psychologists and other allied health professionals, who work with neurodivergent clients and their families, whether in private practice, schools, community settings or larger organisations.

It’s for clinicians who already know that affirming practice goes deeper than the right terminology, and who want to understand how the many parts of a person’s identity shape the way they communicate, connect and move through the systems around them.

It’s for you if you’ve ever thought:

“I want every client and family who walks through my door to feel safe with me, and I’m not sure I’m getting it right for everyone.”

If that sounds familiar, you’ll find a lot here to reflect on and take back into your practice. Educators, practice owners and team leaders who shape clinical and workplace environments will also find plenty to take from it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to already know about affirming practice to join this session?

Not at all. Whether you’re just beginning to explore neurodiversity-affirming, LGBTQIA+ affirming or culturally responsive practice, or you’ve been working this way for years, you’ll leave with new ways of reflecting on your practice and practical ideas to take into your next session.

Will I get a set of rules for working with a particular community?

No, and that’s intentional. There is no single way to be Asian, neurodivergent, queer or gender-diverse, so this session focuses on developing a reflective, flexible and person-centred approach rather than a formula. You’ll still walk away with practical strategies for creating more affirming and inclusive clinical, educational and workplace environments.

Do I need to share my own identity or experiences?

No. You’re welcome to listen, reflect and ask questions in whatever way feels comfortable for you. The session invites you to reflect on your own assumptions privately, and there’s no expectation to share anything personal.

Is this only for speech pathologists?

No. Sandy is a speech pathologist, so communication sits at the heart of the session, but the principles apply across allied health. Occupational therapists, psychologists, educators and other professionals who work with neurodivergent clients and families will find plenty to take from it.

What if I can’t make the live session?

Recording access details will be released with the tickets, closer to the date. We still encourage you to attend live if you can, as the 15-minute Q&A is a chance to explore your own questions and clinical situations with Sandy.

Will this count towards my professional development?

You’ll receive a Certificate of Attendance that you can use to record the session as part of your own professional development or CPD requirements. As always, it’s your responsibility to determine how the session fits within the requirements of your relevant professional body or workplace.

You’ll feel at home here if...

  • You’ve worked with a client or family whose experience didn’t fit neatly into what you were taught, and you’ve wondered what you were missing.
  • You want to support authentic communication and participation, rather than teaching people to conform or mask to fit in.
  • You want to create a space where clients of every identity feel safe to show up as themselves, in your therapy room and in the systems around them.
  • You work with culturally diverse families and want to approach each one with curiosity, rather than assumptions about what their culture means.
  • You’re ready to look honestly at your own assumptions and consider whose needs are being prioritised in your practice.
  • And you want practical strategies for your clinical and workplace environments, not just another way of thinking about the problem.

If that’s where you are, this webinar is for you.
